about the book

a year that
changed everything

Scarlett sits at the small round table by the window. Doobie hops onto the opposite chair and fixes his gaze at her, alert and expectant. Somewhere along the way, Scarlett had begun talking to him—not in the sentimental way people joke about, but in a deliberate, one-sided dialogue in which she plays both parts. The back-and-forth helps her weigh decisions, sort through doubts, and consider risks. Doobie, silent and attentive, serves as the perfect counterpart. [Chapter 4 — Saturday, March 2, 1984]

about the author

fausto gardini

Born in Italy and raised in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, Fausto Gardini grew up between Latin and Central European cultures.
His professional life unfolded over three decades in commercial aviation and airline information technology, an industry where time zones blur and “home” is often a boarding gate. After twelve years with Luxair, Luxembourg’s national airline, he joined SITA (Société Internationale de Télécommunications Aéronautiques), working in Paris and later Atlanta while traveling extensively to promote airline IT services. Along the way, he met executives in ninety-eight countries—just shy of a full set.
